Successful End to a Successful Season at Whip City Speedway

Coming into the last race of the season at Whip City Speedway, Sam Christie trailed teammate Wade Mattesen by 34 points for 3rd place in the series standings. "34 points under the point system at Whip City is a lot, even on a double points night. Basically, tonight was just to protect our 4th place spot and try to have a good last run at Whip City," Sam said before the race.

On a much different track than those that the 270cc micro sprints have raced on all season, the Sam Christie Racing team was struggling to find the setup. After a disappointing 5th in his heat race, crew chief Mike Christie got to work and tried to perfect the setup as best he could. "The track was unpredictable. The car was very tight in the heat, so will do our best to correct this problem for the feature."

With a new setup in the car, Sam started 7th and immediately charged to 4th on the start. One lap later, Sam passed the 3rd place car and sat comfortably in the 3rd spot until a red flag at the halfway point. "The car was a little tight before the red flag, but we were keeping up with the leaders. However, after the red flag, the track tightened up a lot, therefore hurting the car's performance," Sam said after the race. After the red flag, Sam fell back to 5th, but slowly worked his way back to 3rd place. After battling for 5 laps, Sam found some clean air and passed for 2nd place. This marked Sam's second best finish of the year. "We were able to run away with a 2nd place finish with a car with a car that could've very well finished 5th or 6th. Great run for the Sam Christie Racing Team."

Not only was it a great finish for the night, but also was a great finish for the points. Due to the unfortunate luck of the Mattesen Racing Team, Wade's motor blew up, resulting in a 19th place finish. This propelled Sam up from 4th place in points to 3rd. "It's great to finish 3rd in points and a great way to cap off the season, but the reason we did so was because of Wade's bad luck. It doesn't feel as sweet as it would if we beat Wade and the Mattesen Racing Team on the racetrack," Sam said after final points were released.
